Silica gel desiccant is used in transformer and on-load tap changer (OLTC) breathers to prevent moisture ingress into insulating oil. As ambient air is drawn through the breather during thermal breathing cycles, the desiccant adsorbs moisture to protect against oil degradation, reduced dielectric strength, and accelerated cellulose aging.
Our indicating silica gel changes color as it becomes saturated — blue gel transitions from blue to pink, and orange gel transitions from orange to green — giving maintenance crews a clear visual indicator for when the desiccant needs replacement or reactivation. The orange indicating variant is cobalt chloride-free, making it suitable for facilities that restrict the use of cobalt chloride for environmental or regulatory compliance.
Available in 55 lb drums for bulk breather refills and scheduled maintenance programs, as well as 5 lb cans (sold individually or in cases of 4) for smaller breathers or spot replacements. The blended option (2% blue indicating / 98% white non-indicating) offers a cost-effective alternative while still providing visual saturation monitoring through the indicating layer.
Available Variants (2–4 mm bead diameter):
